You hate writing: What can you do about it?

Writing not your thing? Not to worry! There are other ways you can create and share your content online

So you know you need to create content, your own content, to share with your audience to grow your business online.

In a previous blog I talked about using email marketing to get your message out.

But what if you really don’t like writing?

What if you hate writing?

What if the thought of writing a 700+ word blog makes you feel sick to the stomach?

I hear you. I much prefer to create small snippets of information for social media posts than 700 word blog posts.

So I have a question for you.

How would you feel about showing up on video?

Now if you are like most people I know, you really really baulk at the idea of doing videos to share your content.

Going live on video brings up a strong Heck No!!

Not even a pause to breathe before answering that question I can tell!

Stop!

Come back to the room, let me explain! I am going to share with you how to make videos less intimidating and more fun!

Personally, I would much rather jump on a video and talk to you about my ideas, my day or give you some tips about content management than write it down!!

So that makes me a little bit of an odd bod in the greater scheme of things I understand.

Strangely I was never that person who was into drama, I mean a bit in the school play. And I do consider myself much more of an introvert than an extrovert.

BUT I really really dislike writing long pieces of literature! Ha, could you even call blog posts literature I’m not sure that you could!!

What I do know is, that videos on social media, especially Facebook get great exposure and engagement!

They are also a fantastic way to let your audience get to know you. We all know the know, like and trust factor is huge in the success of our business.

What better way to get to know you than to see and hear you on video?

My business coach declared she would never have been as successful in her business if she hadn’t used video to reach out to her prospective clients.

There are a couple of ways your can create your videos.

You can go live directly

or

You can pre-record and upload them to your favourite platform

A note of warning here: if you do pre-record your videos, please don’t fall into the trap of watching them back, deleting them and re-taking them over and over. ( aka Miss Perfectionism ) It will take you forever!

It’s one of the reasons I stuck with lives, quick and over and done with!

Also I didn’t realise at first that I COULD delete them but please don’t, it kind of defeats the purpose!!

So it’s more often than not for my Lives now, one and done. It’s definitely what I would recommend you do!

So what next? You simply have to start!

Actually starting can be the hardest thing to do! You will think of a million other things that need to be done before you can sit down to record your video ( procrastination is strong around things we don't like to do)

Making the effort to set up and do it feels overwhelming and hard but once you’re up and going its get easier

And you don’t need any fancy equipment these days to create videos. If you have a smartphone you can record on that straight to Facebook, Instagram or even LinkedIn if that’s your preference

You don’t even need to set up a special place to do your videos. However i would suggest going to a place where you feel comfortable and aren’t likely to be disturbed

The more you do it the easier it gets. Kind of like any new skill when you think about it like that!

QUICK TIP: Remember to look at the lens not at yourself when you are recording. This can be tricky and make us feel a bit odd. It can help to paste a person’s face at ( not over ) the lens to look at.

Actually it has always helped me to think of talking to someone I know. Someone who is always in your corner supporting you. For me that means pretending to talk to my mum.

My mum always was my biggest fan. She made me feel at ease in all manner of situations and was keen to hear about what I was doing. The fact that she didn’t always understand what I was doing also helped. This means that when I am talking to her ( on my lives) I speak in language that she would understand. It stops the “insider speak” so to speak!

So think about someone who really loves YOU and would support you all the way! it could be your mum or your partner or your best friend!

Also speaking to one person comes across to your audience as well. It will make them feel like you are speaking directly to them, and them alone, which is a great feeling to create.

How can you make it easy?

What else can you do to make it easy on yourself to create video content to share with your audience?

Having your topic drafted out to talk about, can really help put you at ease quickly.

If you know your stuff, no doubt you can speak off the cuff, but if you are nervous already about going live or going on video then having notes can make you feel better. It gives you a framework around which to base your video.

I like having my themes and topics for the month at hand so I always have something to say. I create these topics from my Brainstorming Guide (download it here) I use this frequently to help me and my clients to come up with great ideas for my overall content strategy.

I only have to look back on my last brainstorming session and pick the topic I want to share and then I am away!

Creating your own content to share with your audience is where you want to be aiming for in your business.

Try these 3 steps to start creating video as part of your overall content management strategy.

#1 Get started, take that iPhone and switch from photo to video! When you get going you can create a post from anywhere. Upload it as long as your are connected to wifi or have enough data on your plan and your there.

#2 Remember it’s like talking to your mum ( tor other super supportive person in your life).

#3 Have your notes from your Brainstorming Checklist topic by your side to refer to as needed.

and away you go!

You will wonder why you waited so long to start creating videos!

If you need some help with your content management or generating new content for your video posts ( or any posts ) then go ahead, download my Brainstorming Checklist. I guarantee you will generate some amazing new content to share on your next video!
